Printers are the 6th largest industry within the UK with over 300,000 employees working in over 15,000 printing companies.
Every year, the printing industry reports approximately 1,200 work related accidents to the Health and Safety Executive, with over 200 of these accidents being classified as major injuries such as fractures, breaks and amputations. The three most common types of accidents reported are from contact with print machinery, manual handling activities and slips and trips.
Print workers are also exposed to a range of hazardous substances, including chemicals during the course of their work, resulting in many ill-health complaints and in particular dermatitis. In fact the Health and Safety Executive estimated annual average incident rate for printers between 2003 and 2005 was 18 new cases of dermatitis per 100,000 printers.
