A day in the Life of Our Health & Safety Consultant – London Edition
A day in the life of a Health & Safety Consultant can be busy and varied, as no two clients or workplaces are the same. Our consultant’s day starts early, as he has four clients to visit in and around London. Come along with Cerith Brawn as he goes about his work-day.
The first stop of the day is at an independent television production company, where Cerith will be carrying out a fire risk assessment and a general risk assessment. This involves carefully inspecting the premises, identifying any potential hazards or risks, and making recommendations to the company on how to improve safety and reduce the risk of accidents or incidents. There are aspects to television production studios that are unique to their industry often with lots of cabling, powerful lights, and sound proof edit rooms, each bringing it’s own challenges. Historically, HSM has worked with both television and theatre production companies.
Next, the consultant visits a retained client who manages a block of flats. Here, he will be carrying out a risk assessment and fire risk assessment that covers communal areas and the accessibility of fire exits. This is an important part of ensuring the safety of the residents and visitors to the building. It’s worth mentioning here about the revised legislation for new accommodation blocks between 11-18m tall which sets clearer, stronger standards which will set limits on the combustibility of materials used in the external walls of buildings.
The third client of the day is a historic library, which contains rare, pre-modern books that are over 1000 years old. To protect these valuable and fragile items, the library is temperature controlled and visitors are required to book in their slot to access the books. Here Cerith will be carrying out a fire and general risk assessment to ensure that the library is safe for both the visitors (and the books!)
The final client of the day is a small office with half a dozen staff who are adapting to hybrid working. The consultant carries out a fire and general risk assessment to ensure that the office is safe and that the staff are protected from any potential hazards.
Also here Cerith will be able to bring awareness to a suite of H&S training courses that are available “on tap” to HSM clients, such as: Health & Safety Level 2, Fire Safety, Display Screen Equipment, GDPR, Infection Control, Basic First Aid, Manual Handling, Equality & Diversity Training and more.
As you can see a day in the life of a Health & Safety Consultant is varied and at times challenging, it involves meeting a lot of people and different environments and that’s what makes it enjoyable. However, it is also rewarding as it helps to protect people and their workplaces from potential hazards and risks and importantly stay compliant with H&S regulations.
