Engineering Firm Fined £500,000 After Apprentice Loses Finger in Preventable Accident
An engineering company has been fined £500,000 after an 18-year-old apprentice lost his finger in a serious workplace incident. The accident occurred at Proline Engineering Limited in Greater Manchester, just a month into the apprentice’s placement. Following a brief verbal training, he was left unsupervised while operating a horizontal bandsaw, resulting in the severing of one finger and severe damage to another.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) investigation revealed that the company failed to implement basic safety measures that could have prevented the incident. Proline Engineering pleaded guilty to breaching the Health and Safety at Work Act, highlighting the critical importance of proper training and supervision in safeguarding young workers.
