Food Manufacturer Fined £360,000 After Worker Loses Fingers: A Wake-Up Call for Machine Safety

At Health and Safety Mentor, we understand that workplace safety is non-negotiable. A recent incident involving renown food manufacturer Kerry Ingredients highlights the devastating consequences of neglecting safety protocols.

Kerry Ingredients was fined £360,000 after a 39 year old worker tragically lost several fingers in a machine accident. The worker’s hand became trapped in a conveyor belt due to inadequate machine guarding—a critical safety oversight that could have been prevented.

This case underscores the essential need for proper machine safety measures, including guarding, regular maintenance, and comprehensive employee training. These precautions are vital to protect workers from harm and to avoid severe legal and financial repercussions for businesses.

HSE principal inspector Hazel Dobb said: “This incident could so easily have been avoided by simply carrying out correct control measures and safe working practices.

“Companies should be aware that HSE will not hesitate to take appropriate enforcement action against those that fall below the required standards.”

For businesses, the lesson is clear: safety protocols must be enforced rigorously and reviewed regularly. At Health and Safety Mentor, we are committed to helping businesses develop and maintain effective health and safety practices, and help you manage training to prevent such tragedies.
